Reviewing some essays on Thompson and the book the other day in the British Library, which were published shortly before his death in 1993 but like the volume I’m editing had been some years in gestation and several referred back to Thompson’s formative political period in the 1950s when he left the Communist Party. ![]() ![]() The project is still live and hopefully the book will be out in the autumn. I’ve been engaged for far too long in editing a volume of essays (for CSP) which were originally produced to mark the 50 th anniversary in 2013, although updated since. Even so Thompson’s theoretical and methodological approaches still command interest. A fair bit of the research for the book, carried out in the 1950s, has now been overtaken, either by updated empirical evidence or new ideas on how to approach subjects. ![]() Understanding E P Thompson’s Making of the English Working Class at 60Į P Thompson’s Making of the English Working Class was first published in hardback in 19 will mark the 60 th anniversary. ![]() ![]() gives a voice to those we have seldom heard speak before» «With its oral styles, its mantra-like repetitions, At Night All Blood is Black captivates more surely than a classic war novel ![]() «Diop pitches us - head-first and mid-thought - into Alfa's whorling stream of consciousness. «Part folklore, part existential howl, and part prose poem, it is a heartbreaking account of pointless suffering. «This heartbreaking and poetic novel addresses a story woefully absent from French history books» Guardian «Powerfully original and gripping» The Times, Best Paperbacks of 2021 «A gripping, twisty account of industrial warfare, colonialism, violence, youth and friendship» Guardian deserves the bouquets and trumpets» Observer «A vital decolonisation of the narrative tyranny of the Great War» Ben Okri Viet Thanh Nguyen, author of The Sympathizer Of how our humanity and inhumanity are forever intertwined» ![]() Diop's short, sharp, and serrated novel is a visceral dramatization «An unrelenting take on war, race, masculinity, and colonialism.
